How to Better Understand Gifted Learners
Most of us have heard of gifted children before, but not everyone truly understands the nuances that come with being gifted. Unfortunately, this lack of understanding can often lead to mistreatment or misunderstanding of gifted kids. It’s time to clear up the confusion and put a stop to the myths that surround giftedness. Here are some things everyone must understand about gifted children.
Gifted Children Have Big Feelings
Gifted kids are often more emotionally intense than their peers and may experience bigger highs and lows when it comes to feelings. This is because they think more deeply than those around them, so their inner dialogue is more complex and thorough. As a result, their emotions may be harder for them to process or express in ways that make sense to others.
Gifted Children Are Not “Perfect”
Many people assume that because these kids are smart, they should be able to do everything perfectly—which simply isn’t true! Just like any other kid, gifted children make mistakes and need help sometimes too. They don’t always know what the right answer is or how best to handle a situation. The important thing is for parents and teachers to give them the space they need without expecting perfection from them at all times.
They May Need More Challenging Tasks
When it comes time for schoolwork or tasks at home, there is a tendency to give everyone the same assignment–even if it means giving too much work (or not enough) to certain students! Gifted students need challenges that are appropriate for their level of thinking; otherwise, they can quickly become bored or frustrated with tasks that don’t engage their minds enough. Providing them with challenging assignments keeps them engaged and allows them to develop skills necessary for success in life. Gifted children are our problem-solvers. They love to engage in interesting challenges. Gifted learners know busy work when they see it and are not amused. And of course, will let you know it!
It’s important for us all—parents, teachers, and friends—to better understand the nuances of gifted children so we can treat them with respect and consideration. Gifted kids have big feelings, aren’t perfect all the time, and need more challenging tasks than those around them in order to grow and develop properly. Understanding these things will go a long way toward creating an environment where gifted children can thrive without fear of being misunderstood or mistreated!
